The “open life” indicated on a cosmetic product (the PAO — Period After Opening) is not linked to how quickly the product is used, but to its microbiological and functional stability once opened. After opening, the formula is inevitably exposed to air, light, and contact during application, which can gradually affect both safety and performance, even if the product is used only occasionally.
For Kalme Day Defence, the current indication of 3 months reflects a more stringent and updated stability assessment, aligned with both regulatory expectations and our internal safety standards. This is particularly relevant for a product containing UV filters and designed for sensitive skin, where maintaining full efficacy and stability over time is essential.
I would also like to reassure you on another important aspect:
when used as intended (meaning daily application as an SPF moisturiser) a 50 ml product would typically be finished within approximately 2–3 months. This aligns with dermatological guidance, as SPF products need to be applied in sufficient quantity and reapplied regularly to ensure proper protection. Using smaller amounts or using it only occasionally may extend the duration of the product, but it can also reduce the level of protection achieved.
So the 3-month period is not a limitation of the product’s “quality”, but rather a guarantee that what you apply remains safe and fully effective throughout its use.
