1. What is LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is a lightweight, clear gel for cold sore-prone lips, designed to be applied at the very first tingle or whenever lips first begin to feel sensitive or uncomfortable. It is made with liquorice, a natural source of glycyrrhizic acid, alongside Melissa (lemon balm) and soothing chamomile and comfrey, in a non-greasy, fast-absorbing formula that helps soothe and comfort lips when they feel sore or sensitive. It is 96% naturally derived, vegan and made in Britain.
2. How and when do I use it?
Apply LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel at the very first tingle, or whenever your lips begin to feel sensitive, and keep applying as often as needed. Smooth a thin layer over the area and let it absorb. A little goes a long way, and because the gel dries clear and is not greasy, it is invisible once on and can be worn through the day. Many customers like to keep it close at hand so it is ready whenever extra lip care is needed.
3. Does LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel cure or stop cold sores?
No. LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is a cosmetic lip gel for cold sore-prone lips, not a medicine, so it is not a cure for cold sores, and we do not claim it prevents or stops them. It is made to help soothe and comfort lips at the first tingle and while they feel sore or sensitive. The LipQ Liquorice Balm, which forms the daily step of the LipQ routine, has been evaluated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled consumer study conducted in collaboration with the Herpes Viruses Association. In that study, 73.3% of participants reported that their cold sore episodes felt less severe while using the Balm. If your cold sores are frequent, severe or do not settle, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
4. What is the difference between the Lip Gel and the LipQ Liquorice Lip Balm, and can I use both?
The LipQ Liquorice Lip Balm is the daily step, smoothed over lips morning and night to care for cold sore-prone lips every day. The LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is the targeted care step, applied at the very first tingle or whenever lips begin to feel sensitive. The gel is also lighter and clearer than the richer balm. Many people use both together as the complete LipQ routine.
5. How do liquorice and Melissa work in the gel?
Liquorice is a natural source of glycyrrhizic acid, and Melissa (lemon balm) is the gel's second signature ingredient. Both are widely used in skincare for their soothing properties. In the gel, they sit alongside soothing chamomile and comfrey, chosen together to help comfort lips that feel sore or sensitive.
6. Is it natural, and what is in it?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is 96% naturally derived. It is made with liquorice root extract and dipotassium glycyrrhizate, a source of glycyrrhizic acid, with Melissa (lemon balm), chamomile and comfrey, in a clear, water-based gel, and it is free from parabens, SLS and MI, with no added fragrance. The full ingredients list is shown in the Ingredients section above.
7. Is it vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes. LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is suitable for vegans, with no beeswax or other animal-derived ingredients, and it is PETA-approved under their Global Animal Test Policy, so it is cruelty-free.
8. Is it suitable for sensitive lips, and does it contain nuts?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is made for cold sore-prone and sensitive lips, and contains no nut oils. It does contain denatured alcohol and the naturally occurring fragrance components anethole and benzaldehyde. If your skin is sensitive or allergic, patch test on a small area for 24 hours before first use, and stop using it if any irritation occurs.
9. Does it sting or tingle?
Most people find LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel soothing and cooling on application. Because it contains a little alcohol, some people notice a brief tingle as it goes on, especially on already-sore lips, which usually settles quickly. If it stings or feels uncomfortable, or any irritation occurs, stop using it. Patch testing for 24 hours before first use is sensible if your lips are sensitive.
10. What does it smell and taste like?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel has a gentle, natural liquorice scent that comes from aniseed rather than any added synthetic perfume. Customers tend to describe it as pleasant rather than medicinal, and you cannot really taste it once it is on.
11. How long does a 15ml tube last, and is it worth the price?
A 15ml tube of LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel lasts most people well, because only a thin layer is needed each time. Because the formula spreads easily, only a small amount is needed with each application, making one tube last surprisingly well.
12. Can I use it during pregnancy or on children?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or want to use it on a child, we would recommend checking with your doctor or pharmacist first, as we cannot give individual medical advice. As with all our products, keep it out of reach of children.
13. Can I use it alongside other cold sore treatments?
Yes. Some customers use LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel on its own, and others use it alongside their usual cold sore treatment. If you are using a prescription or pharmacy treatment and are unsure about combining products, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
14. Where is LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel made?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is made in Britain by Skin Shop, a UK specialist in sensitive and problem-prone skin for over 20 years, with verified customer reviews built up over many years.
15. Can I wear it under make-up or lipstick?
Yes. LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel dries clear and is not greasy, so it works well under lip products. Apply a thin layer at the first tingle, let it absorb for a moment, then put your lipstick or balm on top as usual. Because it is invisible once on, many customers are happy to wear it through the day, at work or out, without it being noticeable.
16. Can I use it on cold sores around the mouth, on the chin or below the nose?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is designed for the lips and the skin immediately around them. If you choose to apply it just beyond the lip border, avoid contact with the eyes and the inside of the nose or mouth, and patch test first if your skin is sensitive. For cold sores elsewhere on the body, or if you are unsure, ask your pharmacist or GP.
17. How is it different from a medicated cold sore cream or patch?
LipQ Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel is a naturally derived cosmetic lip gel, not a medicine, so it works differently from an antiviral cream or a cold sore patch. It is 96% naturally derived, can be applied at the very first tingle and reapplied as often as needed, and it dries clear rather than sitting on the lips as a visible patch. Many customers tell us they prefer its light, comfortable feel, and some choose to use the gel alongside their usual treatment. If you are using a prescription or pharmacy product and are unsure about combining them, check with your pharmacist or GP.
