1. What is Hydrosil Scalp Shield Tonic?
Hydrosil Scalp Shield Tonic is a gentle, leave-in scalp spray for dry, flaky and sensitive scalps. It is applied directly to the scalp after washing and between washes and left in to help maintain scalp comfort and hydration. The formula combines a patented passion fruit seed complex, a chicory root prebiotic, the active component of Australian tea tree and plant proteins to help comfort the scalp, hydrate the skin and reduce visible flaking while supporting the scalp's natural barrier. It is steroid-free, fragrance-free, vegan and dermatologically tested for sensitive skin.
2. What causes a dry, itchy, flaky scalp?
A dry, itchy, flaky scalp is usually a sign of dryness or sensitivity in the skin rather than a hair problem. It is often linked to eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis or a contact reaction to ingredients in hair products, and cold or centrally heated air, sweat and stress can make it worse. Scalp Shield Tonic is made to soothe and hydrate this kind of dry, sensitive scalp.
3. How do I use Scalp Shield Tonic?
Use it once a day after washing, ideally with Hydrosil Scalp Shield Shampoo, while the hair is still damp. Part the hair in a few places, spray the tonic directly onto the scalp across the whole head and massage it in gently so it reaches the skin. Leave it in and style as normal, drying on a low to medium heat if you blow dry. Between washes, spritz it onto the scalp whenever it feels dry or itchy.
4. What is the difference between Scalp Shield Tonic and Scalp Shield Shampoo, and do I need both?
The Shampoo is a gentle, sulphate-free wash that cleanses the scalp and lifts away flakes without stripping. The Tonic is a leave-in spray that keeps soothing and hydrating the scalp after washing and between washes. They are made to work together: wash with the Shampoo, then spray on the Tonic. You can use the Tonic on its own, but most people find the two work best as a pair, which is why they are also sold together in the Scalp Shield Duo Pack.
5. Is a dry, flaky scalp the same as dandruff?
Not always. Ordinary dandruff is linked to a yeast on the scalp and tends to ease with anti-fungal, anti-dandruff shampoos. A dry, flaky, itchy scalp is more often down to dryness, sensitivity or conditions like eczema, and can feel worse after an anti-dandruff shampoo. If that sounds like your scalp, Scalp Shield Tonic is made for the dry, sensitive kind rather than the yeast-related kind.
6. Can I use it on scalp eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Scalp Shield Tonic is designed to soothe and hydrate dry, itchy, flaky scalps, including scalps prone to eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis and contact reactions, and many customers with these conditions use it. It is a cosmetic product rather than a medicine, so it is not a treatment for these conditions. If you are under a doctor's care or using a prescribed product, check with them first, and as with any product for sensitive skin, patch test before first use and stop if it stings or irritates.
7. Does Scalp Shield Tonic contain steroids?
No. Scalp Shield Tonic is steroid-free. It works through naturally derived actives, a passion fruit seed complex, a chicory root prebiotic, Australian tea tree and plant proteins, rather than steroids, so it is made for gentle, everyday, long-term use.
8. What does Scalp Shield Tonic smell like?
It has a light, natural, slightly herbal scent that comes from the Australian tea tree, and it is free from added perfume. The scent is noticeable when you spray it on and settles as the hair dries. If you are sensitive to scent, this plant-based, fragrance-free smell is usually much gentler than perfumed hair products.
9. Can I use Scalp Shield Tonic on braids, weaves or protective styles?
Yes. Because it is a leave-in spray, you can spritz it straight onto the scalp between washes without disturbing the style, which suits braids, weaves and other protective styles that can leave the scalp dry, itchy and sore. It helps calm the itching and flaking and keeps the scalp feeling comfortable.
10. How long does Scalp Shield Tonic take to work?
Some people feel the scalp is calmer and less itchy within minutes of the first use, while for others it builds gradually. Most find the itching and flaking easing over two to three weeks of daily use, with the scalp feeling more settled after about a month. It is made for steady, everyday use rather than an overnight fix.
11. Is Scalp Shield Tonic vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes. Scalp Shield Tonic is vegan and is not tested on animals. It is also 98% natural, dermatologically tested for sensitive skin and made in Britain.
12. Is Scalp Shield Tonic suitable for sensitive skin, and does it contain anything I might react to?
It is dermatologically tested for sensitive skin and made without steroids, sulphates, parabens or added perfume. It does contain plant proteins derived from wheat, soy and corn, so if you have a known allergy to any of these, take care. As with any product for sensitive skin, patch test before first use and stop if it stings or becomes more irritated.
